Just a question, what is your opinion of the 924? (since I assume that you are the Porsche expert here :)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:29 |
|
It's alright. Depends on what you're looking for and what you want. But if you want the best of the 924s that you can actually find, go and get a 924S, a 924 with the 944's drivetrain+engine. It's actually slightly quicker than a 944, but it's still a 924.
You could also get a 924 Turbo/931, but that's a whole other thing. I'm not the 924 expert, you'll need Mathias for that. Page him. :P

I all of a sudden wanted a cheap Porsche earlier, so I thought 944 was the answer! And then I saw maintenance costs... so I figured 924! I also read somewhere that most of the 944 and 924 body panels are interchangeable. Is that true?
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:41 |
|
Hey, that looks really fun!!! I bet I could actually fit my hand in there!
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:55 |
|
924S now? If it's that cheap, I'd go for one of those. Probably debadge it, put on 944 wheels, and call it a day.
Maybe I'll just buy one without a motor and do an SRT4 swap like I've always wanted. Porsche SRT4 has a decent ring to it.....
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:56 |
|
I don't know about the body panels being interchangeable, never seen that. The maintenance costs should actually be somewhat similar between the two, but it really depends on the condition of the vehicle you find.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:56 |
|
I don't see why not..
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:57 |
|
You know, I was thinking about that, and I don't think the SRT 944 would work.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 21:59 |
|
What about 924S-RT ?
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:00 |
|
Dammit, I've seen 5 944's this week. Stop teasing. #slowsuvlifesuckssometimes
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:01 |
|
Well, all I know is that I want a really fast front engine beetle!
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:06 |
|
IT'S NOT A BEETLE!! (O_0)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:08 |
|
The problem is that the 924/944/968 are all logitudinal engines, and the 924's Audi bellhousing; that's gonna require tons of fabrication, I don 't think it's worth it to try to swap in a FWD-designed, transverse mounted SRT into it.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:10 |
|
I was making a Volkswagen joke! Afterall... (refer to my avatar) ;)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:11 |

Sir, YOU DRIVE A BEETLE!! (O_O)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:14 |
|
? No I drive this
SUCH MAJESTIC
SO COMPOSURE
MUCH SIDEWALL ROLLING
WOW
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:14 |
|
Who said anything about making the car FWD? I'll just turn the SRT4 block to a more proper direction and find a different trans that bolts up....
If I never drive FWD again, I wont miss it.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:20 |
|
I didn't say the car would be FWD, I was talking about the engine's original usage.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:21 |
|
Eh....needs more sway bars.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:24 |
|
Needs lower profile tires and wider wheels! (205/55R16 is not big enough for a 3300 LB car! I filled it up (derp) the day before and it was swinging around lol) What I really want are some 17" Denver wheels (OEM 06-09 GTI wheels) with some 225/45R17s (So I could stay in street stock class)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:27 |
|
Well, a custom bellhousing and figuring out the input/output shaft to make it work really isn't that bad. It'll make a lot more power than a regular 924S or even a 944 Turbo. It'll even be easier to work on.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:33 |
|
Needs something else...
![]() 10/15/2014 at 22:33 |

![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:24 |

Oh now I know why you are keeping it from us! It looks amazing, really great buy. Everyones first Porsche should be a 944.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:25 |
|
GLI wut?? What are you talking about?
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:26 |
|
Well if we go on the basis of first drive, mine was a 911 of course, but this is the first Porsche I've ever bought, and it won't be the last. :)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:29 |
|
These..... Jetta with GTI bits! (Suspension, Engine, Transmission, wheels, etc.)
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:35 |
|
Oh, cool.
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:48 |
|
Is it not that bad? I remember working on a 944 turbo when I was an intern in highschool and it was like they molded the engine bay around the engine haha. I got big hands though and I'm used to old Toyota trucks so I'm spoiled I guess
![]() 10/15/2014 at 23:51 |
|
Oh you were referring to actually working on it? I've got small hands, it works for me. Space should be the same as a Turbo though. I haven't had to do any work to it yet.
